Tomaž Karčnik co-hosts the first DigNA webinar on State of the Art DNA Data Storage

We are excited to present the first webinar of the DigNA Webinar Series titled “State of the Art DNA Data Storage” hosted by Robert Grass (DiDAX project) and Tomaž Karčnik (PEARL-DNA project) on December 12th, 2024.

This is the first webinar by DigNA – a portfolio of projects funded under the 2022 EIC Pathfinder Challenge: DNA-based digital data storage. The main goal of this educational seminar series is to share expertise within DigNA portfolio and share know-how useful to progress in the interdisciplinary field of DNA data storage.

Abstract

Not long after having discovered how DNA encodes the human genome, scientists started to think about storing non-biological information in DNA. These ideas were significantly accelerated about ten years ago after two research groups had independently written and read ca. 1 MB of digital information in the form of synthetic DNA.

In this webinar, we briefly discuss the history of DNA data storage, and then elaborate on the current state of the art of the technology. We will cover current technologies for DNA synthesis, sequencing and preservation, which will be discussed in greater depth in the following webinars of the series. This first webinar aims to highlight the current capabilities of the various concepts, and present potential applications and use cases together with a discussion on costs and scalability.

The webinar is intended as a general introduction for scientists with a background in biology, chemistry or computer science and information technology, and who are interested in better understanding the science and technology of data storage in DNA.
